What is Green Coffee Bean Extract? Can it Help You Lose Weight?
Hey ladies! Welcome to my green coffee bean extract review. I plan to share with you some great information to help you better understan whether green coffee bean is for you.
For the most part, coffee is viewed as bad for your health. This is only partially true, however, as green coffee extract offers a number of important health and weight loss benefits. A recent feature on by Dr. Oz has led to massive interest in this natural product, which offers effects that simply can’t be obtained from brewed coffee.
Dr. Lindsey Duncan, who accompanied Dr. Oz in explaining the weight loss benefits of this extract, has studied pure green coffee bean extract for years and explained that, when taken as a supplement, research shows that green coffee bean extract assists in weight loss in a few ways.
While Dr. Duncan is typically very hesitant to endorse or recommend supplements, he makes an exception in this case given the promising clinical studies and scientific evidence supporting the benefits of green coffee bean extract.
The active ingredient in green coffee beans is chlorogenic acid, which is completely eradicated when beans are roasted at high temperatures in excess of 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Raw coffee beans are nearly 50% chlorogenic acid, which makes them the food with the highest concentration of this antioxidant yet discovered. This is also why the extract is processed while the coffee beans are still green and raw and why a cup of coffee can’t offer the same benefits.
Green Coffee Bean Extract Review:
Studies are showing that green coffee bean extract can play an important role in weight loss. According to an important study led by Joe Vinson, PhD. in 2012, overweight and obese adults consuming a small amount of ground green coffee bean extract daily lost, on average, 10% of their body weight. They concluded that a few capsules of this supplement daily are a safe and effective way to boost weight loss. There were no harmful side effects discovered in this clinical study or any other.
This study lasted 22 weeks and involved 16 overweight or obese adults who cycled between low and high doses of green coffee bean extract and a placebo, allowing them to serve as their own control group. At the end of the study, participants lost 17 pounds on average with a 16% reduction in body fat and a 10.5% reduction in overall weight. Researchers noted that weight loss could be even more substantial given that all participants were at one point on a placebo.
All research into the ability of green coffee bean extract to improve weight loss points to one thing: the chlorogenic acid found in high numbers in the raw form of the bean.
Chlorogenic Acid – The Secret to Weight Loss
Chlorogenic acid, which is found in a very high concentration in green coffee beans, is a selective inhibitor for glucose production taking place in the liver. This natural polyphenolic compound is related to chlorophyll and found in many other plants in addition to coffee beans. Studies have confirmed that raw coffee beans, however, have the highest concentration. Specifically, this antioxidant is able to inhibit glucose-6-phosphate, an enzyme that promotes secretion of insulin and plays a role in gluconeogenesis. Chlorogenic acid is a powerful yet natural antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body and also helps to slow down aging and improve circulation.
How It Works
Green coffee bean extract helps to increase weight loss in a few ways:
- Chlorogenic acid in green coffee bean extract inhibits the liver’s secretion of glucose into the blood, which forces the body to metabolize fat that has been stored, turning it into glucose for energy. Because the body can no longer rely on gluconeogenesis to take place in the liver, it must use glucose that’s stored in fat cells, leading to improved fat burning.
- Delays and suppresses fat absorption as the chlorogenic acid and caffeine together reduce serum triglyceride levels. The effect was much higher with green coffee bean extract compared to roasted coffee bean extract.
- Chlorogenic acid in green coffee bean extract also seems to lower insulin levels, which boosts metabolism so the liver may burn accumulated fat in the body.
How much is enough for Weight Loss?
Green coffee bean extract should be taken daily in the form of a supplement. It does not contain a high amount of caffeine and does not work by making you jittery; the caffeine level in a single dose is usually around 23 mg, compared to over 100 mg in a single cup of brewed coffee. A minimum dose of 400 mg of pure green coffee bean extract is recommended before each meal. For improved results, a minimum of 800 mg should be consumed 30 minutes before each meal, at least twice daily.
It’s important to note that no side effects have been reported in any study conducted on the effects of green coffee bean extract, so there is no risk of overdose. No toxicity level has yet been found.
While exercising and eating a balanced, healthy meal can further boost the effects of green coffee bean extract, the clinical study by Dr. Vinson demonstrated that the weight loss and metabolism boosting effects of the supplement occur regardless of exercise or diet. During that study, participants were instructed to make no major changes to their diet or fitness routine. The 10.5% reduction in overall weight and 16% reduction in body fat occurred with no change to eating habits or exercise.
Other Health Benefits of Green Coffee Bean Extract
While this natural supplement has gained the most attention for its ability to boost weight loss and help the body burn stored fat, it also has a range of other health benefits to enjoy.
General Health – Most polyphenols like chlorogenic acid work as antioxidants, which have anti-cancer properties. Antioxidants fight free radicals in the body before they cause cancer or tumors. Free radicals are unstable compounds that attempt to capture electrons from other compounds in the body to gain stability. When a free radical in the blood stream grabs electrons from other molecules, these molecules then become free radicals themselves, starting a chain reaction that can eventually cause cancerous cells to develop. Antioxidants are one way for the body to fight free radicals, which donate electrons to free radicals to neutralize them without becoming unstable themselves.
Cardiovascular Health – A high level of homocysteine in the blood is one of many risk factors for heart disease. Chlorogenic acid, the active ingredient in green coffee bean extract, has been shown in clinical trials to lower the amount of plasma homocysteine levels. It’s also been shown as an effective treatment for hypertension, as it has the ability to combat free radicals, regenerate vitamin E levels in the body, inhibit fat and LDL (bad cholesterol) degradation and improve overall heart health.
Blood Pressure – It’s been shown that the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of participants in clinical studies lowered significantly while taking chlorogenic acid. There were no harmful side effects found during the study or any difference in the pulse rate and BMI between groups of participants. Chlorogenic acid has the ability to inhibit oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which causes plaque to form in arteries and accelerates heart disease and atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Oxidation is a chemical process that occurs when a molecule loses electrons. An example of this reaction is the formation of rust when iron is exposed to oxygen.
Supports Healthy Levels of Blood Sugar – Chlorogenic acid has also been shown to support healthy levels of blood sugar. A few separate studies have found that individuals who take supplements like green coffee bean extract have a lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Research has also found that this effect is due to chlorogenic acid’s effects on the metabolism of glucose.
Glucose is stored by the body in the liver in a polysaccharide (a carbohydrate molecule) known as glycogen. Glycogen is composed of insoluble glucose molecules. During glycogenolysis, an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphatase releases glucose into the blood. When this process is inhibited by chlorogenic acid, the body must get its energy from stored fat cells rather than a supply of glucose from the liver. This lowers the level of blood glucose while simultaneously lowering the amount of stored fat for increased weight loss.
Diabetes Maintenance – Diabetics can also benefit by taking a daily supplement of green coffee bean extract, as the antioxidant chlorogenic acid works to stabilize blood sugar levels. This is one of the most important aspects of managing diabetes. Of course, diabetics can also benefit from the weight loss effects of green coffee bean extract, as losing weight can reduce or eliminate many of the symptoms of the chronic disease.
