The Research Behind 5-HTP
The first study conducted in Italy on the supplement’s weight loss benefits showed great promise. The double-blind, placebo-controlled study on obese women involved giving half the participants 8mg/kg of 5-HTP daily for 5 weeks while the other half received a placebo. No women in the study had any changes to their diet. When the study was over, the group taking the 5-HTP supplement showed a statistically greater amount of weight loss over the control group by consuming less carbs and calories.
A second study was conducted to see if the supplement could have the same benefits when combined with a restricted calorie diet. In this study, half of the participants were placed on a placebo while the other half received 5-HTP for two 6-week periods of time. During the first half of the study, no changes to diet were made. During the second phase, participants were placed on a 1,200 calorie a day diet that prohibited snacks high in carbohydrates. Individuals taking 5-HTP lost over 4 pounds on average in the first half of the study and almost 12 pounds during the second phase. The control group lost less than 1 pound during the first phase and less than 2 pounds during the second half of the study.
A study conducted at the University of Pavia also tested sublingual 5-HTP spray on healthy but overweight women. During this study, half of the women used the oral spray 5 times per day for 8 weeks while the other half received a placebo. When the study was over, researchers concluded that the women who used the 5-HTP had higher levels of satiety over the control group with a lower BMI.
Is 5-HTP Right for Me?
5-HTP is most effective for people who are emotional over-eaters as it prompts the brain to produce serotonin, stabilizing your mood and helping your brain feel full. Individuals who should avoid 5-HTP include people with Down syndrome and pregnant or breast-feeding women as the side effects are unknown. Potential side effects include heartburn, drowsiness (it is also used as a sleep aid by some people), nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. If you experience side effects, they may be relieved by reducing your dose.

Dr. Oz recommends starting with 50mg of 5-HTP three times per day, taking it 30 minutes before each meal. It’s important to consult with your physician if you feel you should increase your dose. Continue taking 5-HTP for at least three months to see if it improves your mood and decreases your appetite before you consider a higher dose. This is not an immediate way to lose weight, although it is effective. Select a 5-HTP supplement that has no preservatives, coloring agents, gluten, shellacs or any other allergens. It can also be taken with 50 to 100mg of vitamin B6 to ensure the body converts it to serotonin quickly.
